1,100 years of history: the second tomb of Saint Benedict
Fleury Abbey holds the remains of Saint Benedict of Nursia (480-547), founder of the Benedictine order. How did relics from Monte Cassino arrive here? In 672, French monk Aigulf was sent by Bishop Mommolin to secretly recover bones in the Italian monastery devastated by Lombards. He returned triumphantly. In the 9th century, Fleury was Europe's largest intellectual center with 80,000 manuscripts. The only medieval Benedictine monastery still inhabited in Loire Valley.
