Why it's called "the château with two faces"
The château has two façades from radically different eras: medieval (13th century) on the town side, with its austere round towers; classical (18th century) on the garden side, with its soft pink symmetric façade. This duality tells eight centuries of history: a defensive fortress turned pleasure residence. No other Loire château offers such a striking contrast between its two façades.
The residence of the Bishops of Orléans
For six centuries, from 1200 to the French Revolution, the château was the residence of the Bishops of Orléans. This is where François Villon (the medieval poet) was held prisoner in the underground cells in 1461. The episcopal furniture, the undergrounds, the vaulted cellars and the old dungeons are open to visitors — a rare dive into the monastic and penal history of the Middle Ages.
Inside: 2000 objects, from attics to undergrounds
The visit is unusual in its route: it starts in the attics and goes down to the undergrounds, passing through the living rooms. Over 2000 objects and pieces of furniture are displayed — 18th-century furniture, formal tableware, costumes, scientific instruments, cabinets of curiosities. Plan 1h30 to 2h for the full visit. Audio guide available.
The 7-hectare park-garden
The château is surrounded by a 7-hectare English-style park, classified Remarkable Garden. Century-old trees, moats, a pond, views over the neighbouring Saint-Liphard collegiate church. Ideal for a picnic after the visit, or a quiet walk with children. Free access on some days, combined ticket château + park on others — check seasonal hours.
Family activities
Three activities stand out for children: the Dragons trail (treasure hunt in the château), the suspended nets in the park's trees, and the Minimes farm (animals to discover, open during school holidays). The "Enquêtes d'Anne Mesia" also offer a historical escape game for tweens and adults. The château is one of the rare ones in the region where a family genuinely spends a full half-day without boredom.

Combine with a night at La Maison du Château
La Maison du Château is 100 metres from the château — you walk in after a day spent at Chambord or Cheverny, for a more intimate visit late afternoon or first thing the next morning. It's the ideal combination to taste both royal grandeur AND the intimacy of a lived-in château, in the same stay.
