The 3 access levels
Level 1: dog allowed everywhere on leash, including royal apartments. 6 châteaux. Level 2: dog allowed inside only in a carrier bag. 8 châteaux. Level 3: dog forbidden inside, allowed only in park. 7 châteaux. No château totally bans dogs. Tip: call 24 hours ahead to confirm.
Level 1, dog on leash everywhere
Six châteaux. Langeais: short leash (1m), entire château and park. Ussé: everywhere including royal bedrooms. Montpoupon: owner has two Labradors. Beauregard: leash everywhere. Talcy: very flexible policy. Meung-sur-Loire: leash allowed except in temporary exhibition rooms. Our top: Langeais.
Level 2, in bag inside
Eight châteaux. Chenonceau: closed bag, free in gardens. Bag rental 5 euros at reception. Villandry: bag in château, free in gardens. Cheverny: bag (hound pack lives in estate). Clos Lucé: carried max 8 kg. Amboise: bag required. Loches: bag in keep. Azay-le-Rideau: bag in château. Royal de Blois: bag in apartments. Foldable "Sherpa" bag (Decathlon 25 euros) supports up to 10 kg.
Level 3, park only
Seven châteaux. Chambord: free in 5,440-hectare park. Guard box at entry 2 euros/hour (10 boxes). Chaumont-sur-Loire: allowed on rampart walk. Sully-sur-Loire: free in park. Saumur: free quays and Loire banks. Brézé: free courtyard. Le Lude: free park. Bréhémont: free gardens. Chambord tip: do château in shifts (parents alternating with dog in park).

Loire à Vélo: 800 km, leashed dogs allowed, regular water points. Meung-Beaugency (8 km, flat, shaded). Sologne forest: 500,000 hectares, leashed dogs March-August (hunting and nesting). GR3 and GR41 trails. Sologne ponds: Étang du Puits at Cerdon, Étang de la Sansonnière at Souvigny. Reinforced anti-parasitic (ticks), fresh water, waste bags.
