When to visit the Loire châteaux

The Loire Valley changes radically by season. Here's a month-by-month guide to pick the right time for your traveller profile.

Spring (April-June) — the best compromise

Spring is generally the best season. Gardens bloom — Cheverny tulips in April, rose gardens in May, luminous June. Temperatures are mild (15-23°C), châteaux less saturated than summer, lodging prices reasonable. May is the optimal month if you want all of this at once. Downside: May long weekends are heavily booked, especially at Chambord. Prefer non-holiday weekends.

Summer (July-August) — events and heat

High season. Pros: all the events (son et lumière, festivals, evening markets), Loire guinguettes, swimming at Beaugency. Cons: large crowds at Chambord and Chenonceau, temperatures sometimes >30°C, higher lodging prices. Strategy: visit the big châteaux in the morning (before 11am), enjoy the house and terrace in the afternoon during peak heat, evening outings.

Autumn (September-October) — the under-rated season

Many travellers ignore autumn. That's a mistake. September still offers 25°C days, fewer people, gourmet markets (mushrooms, game, harvest), incomparable golden light on the tuffeau stone. October: Chambord forests turn every shade from russet to orange. Ideal for photographers. And hotels are 30% cheaper.

Winter (November-March) — intimacy and silence

Winter is polarising. You'll hate it or love it. Pros: nearly empty châteaux, mist on the Loire, intimate interiors, minimum lodging prices, Christmas markets in Blois and Orléans. Cons: short days (5-6h of usable light), some châteaux closed in January, more limited dining. For a romantic weekend as a couple, unbeatable. For a family holiday with kids, prefer other seasons.

Events calendar not to miss

April: Cheverny tulips, Easter Festival at the châteaux. May-June: son et lumière begins in Blois, Chambord. July: Festicolor in Meung-sur-Loire, summer festivals at all châteaux. August: Nuits Insolites at Chambord (night visits). September: European Heritage Days (free but packed). October: Touraine harvest. December: Blois Christmas market, Chambord illuminations. Precise calendar on official sites.

Our recommendation by profile

Romantic couples: mid-May or mid-October. Families with children: July (animations) or spring long weekends. Photographers: October or February (mist). Cycling and nature: May-June or September. Tight budget: November or February. First trip to the region: April-June. If you had to choose one month: June.
