Loire Valley Grape Harvest 2026: 8 Estates That Open Their Doors

When do you harvest by appellation?

Touraine and Anjou crémant: late August to early September. Sancerre and Touraine sauvignon: September 5-20. Anjou and Touraine dry chenin: September 10-25. Sancerre pinot noir: September 15-30. Cabernet franc from Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur: September 20 - October 10. Sweet chenin (Vouvray, Quart-de-Chaume): late September to late October. 2026 should advance 3-5 days vs average.

8 estates welcoming amateur pickers

1) Domaine Huet (Vouvray): reference for sweet chenin. 2) Henri Bourgeois (Sancerre, Chavignol): "harvest-stay" 3-day formula with lodging and tastings, €480. 3) Charles Joguet (Chinon): biodynamic. 4) Domaine de la Charmoise (Henry Marionnet, Touraine): "half-day harvest + lunch" €65. 5) Château de Villeneuve (Saumur-Champigny). 6) Domaine des Roches Neuves (Saumur). 7) Domaine du Closel (Savennières). 8) Domaine François Cotat (Sancerre).

The "harvest-lunch" alternative

Over 30 Loire Valley estates offer them, €55-95 per person. Arrival 8:30 AM, coffee-pastries, briefing, harvest 8:45 AM-noon, snack on the rows around 10 AM, end of morning at the cellar, food-wine pairing lunch (4-5 wines), 3 PM departure. The ideal formula for Parisian and foreign travelers.

Lodging near the vines: 5 charming options

1) La Maison du Château in Meung-sur-Loire: central base between Sancerre and Anjou, ideal for two regions over 4 days. 2) Domaine Henri Bourgeois — "La Côte des Monts Damnés" in Chavignol. 3) Château de Coulaine in Chinon. 4) Logis du Prieuré in Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent (Saumur). 5) Manoir de la Forêt in Ouzouer-sur-Loire.

Ideal 4-day program: harvest + 2 châteaux

Day 1 (Monday): arrival in Meung late morning, lunch. Afternoon Chambord and Loire à Vélo walk. Day 2 (Tuesday): 6 AM departure for Vouvray (1h10), harvest at Domaine Huet 8 AM-12:30 PM, lunch at the estate, return Meung 6 PM. Day 3 (Wednesday): 7:30 AM departure for Sancerre (1h30), harvest-lunch at Henri Bourgeois 9 AM-3 PM, return Meung 7 PM. Day 4 (Thursday): quiet morning at Meung château, lunch, 3 PM Paris departure.

What equipment to bring

Sturdy canvas pants (pruning shears damage clothing), t-shirt + sweatshirt (strong thermal variation), closed sturdy shoes, hat, thin gardener gloves, 1L water bottle. SPF 30 sunscreen, insect screen, cloth handkerchiefs. Clean shirt change for lunch. Professional harvest: 18,000 steps and 4-6 kg carried. Plan 2 recovery days after.

Harvesting in the Loire Valley is entering the secret of a thousand-times-celebrated but rarely lived terroir. From Meung-sur-Loire, 1h10 from Vouvray, 1h30 from Sancerre and 1h40 from Chinon.
