Loire Valley wines: 8 wineries to visit

The Loire Valley is France's third wine region and one of the most diverse. Here are eight producers to discover on a weekend.

Loire Valley wines in brief

Three big families. Dry whites: Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé (sauvignon), Muscadet (melon de Bourgogne). Smooth reds: Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur-Champigny (cabernet franc). Sparklings: Vouvray, Crémants de Loire, Saumur. Four particularly renowned AOCs: Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Vouvray, Chinon. Mild climate, varied soils (flint, limestone, tuffeau). Domains are often family-run and welcome visits without appointment.

Sancerre — sauvignon elegance

1h30 from Meung-sur-Loire, Sancerre produces one of the most recognised sauvignon blancs in the world. Three reference domains: Domaine Vacheron (organic, careful winemaking), Domaine Henri Bourgeois (family institution, several plot-specific cuvées), Domaine Pinard (artisanal, intimate tastings). Cellar bottle prices: €15-30. Book your visit by phone 1-3 days ahead to avoid arriving during harvest.

Pouilly-Fumé — Sancerre's mirror

Across the Loire facing Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé comes from the same sauvignon grape but on different (flint) soils. The result: a more mineral, more structured wine. Domaine Didier Dagueneau (legendary but hard to visit), Château du Nozet (Patrick de Ladoucette, large but very accessible), Domaine Masson-Blondelet (family-run, warm tastings). Bottles €20-50 at the domain.

Vouvray — chenin diversity

45 minutes from Meung-sur-Loire, Vouvray produces chenin blanc in multiple versions: dry, semi-dry, sweet, dessert, sparkling. Three addresses: Domaine Huet (institution, biodynamic, long ageing), Domaine François Pinon (organic, interesting structure), Domaine Vincent Carême (talented younger generation). Ideal for comparative tasting — you taste 5-6 wines from the same grape, very different. Bottles €12-30.

Chinon — finesse in cabernet franc

Further west, 1h30 from Meung-sur-Loire, Chinon produces remarkable cabernet franc reds. Domaine Charles Joguet (historic figure), Domaine Bernard Baudry (organic, fine plot-specific), Domaine Couly-Dutheil (high volume but consistent quality). Young wines are fruity, ageing cuvées gain complexity after 5-10 years. Bottles €15-40.

Bourgueil and Saumur-Champigny — the quiet neighbours

If Chinon is too far for your stay, Bourgueil and Saumur-Champigny (1h15 and 1h45 respectively) offer cabernet franc just as interesting at more accessible prices. Domaine Yannick Amirault at Bourgueil. Domaine Antoine Sanzay at Saumur-Champigny. Bottles €12-25 at the domain.

How to organise a winery day

Limit yourself to 3 wineries per day max (cognitive fatigue after the fourth is real). Visit morning (10-12am) and afternoon (2:30-5pm), with a real lunch between. Designate a sober driver. Bring water and salty crackers to neutralise between tastings. And keep a notebook: you'll regret not knowing which of the eight Sancerres you tasted you really liked.
