Visit Chambord: complete guide

Chambord is the most visited château in the Loire — therefore the most exposed to mass tourism. Here's how to really enjoy it.

Visit Chambord: complete guide

The château in numbers

Chambord is outsized: 156-metre façade, 426 rooms, 282 fireplaces, 77 staircases, 5,440-hectare forest estate (larger than Paris itself). Built from 1519 under François I, never completed. The myth: the double-helix staircase was designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The reality: we don't really know, but the Italian genius frequented the court. UNESCO World Heritage listed.

Hours and prices 2026

Open year-round except 1 January and 25 December. Hours: 9am-6pm in high season, 9am-5pm off-season. Adult ticket: €16, free under 25. Parking: €6 for the day. Online booking highly recommended (saves 20-30 minutes in high season). Several options: self-guided, guided tour (1h), immersive costumed visit (school holidays). Audio guide included (FR, EN, ES, IT, DE).

What you absolutely must see

The double-helix staircase: try climbing while someone descends — you'll never cross. The royal apartments of François I. The panoramic terraces (360° view over the forest). The King's chamber. The stables (recently restored). The royal forest (free, accessible via north and south gates). Plan 2h inside the château and 1h in the park.

How to avoid the crowd

Tour buses generally arrive between 10:30am and 11am, and leave around 3pm. Strategy 1: arrive at opening (9am) and visit for 2h, you'll have the château nearly to yourself. Strategy 2: arrive at 3:30pm and visit until closing. Strictly avoid May long weekends and 14 July — peak attendance. In winter, any time works — there's no one.

Chambord with kids

The double-helix staircase fascinates from age 5. The terraces are safe and offer a wide space to run. The park has children's bike rentals, playgrounds, deer-watching points (boar and deer visible in the morning). The Maison de Chambord (south of the estate) runs costumed activities during school holidays. Plan 4-5h for a family with two breaks (snack and picnic).

How to get to Chambord

By car: from Meung-sur-Loire, 45 minutes via D951 then D33. Spacious parking at the estate entrance, €6. By train: no station at Chambord. Easiest is Blois (1h30 from Paris) then Rémi bus line 3 or Châteaubus shuttle in season (~35 min). By bike: the Loire by Bike route passes 15 km away, with a cycle path leading to the estate.
