Loire castles weekend by train from Paris

You can visit the most beautiful Loire châteaux without renting a car. Here's how, from Paris, in 2 days, without missing the essentials.

Loire castles weekend by train from Paris

Why the train wins

Paris-Loire return by train costs around €40 when booked in advance, against €70 by car with tolls and fuel. More importantly: you save 3-4 hours of driving, read or sleep along the way, and arrive relaxed. The main Loire stations — Tours, Blois, Orléans, Meung-sur-Loire, Amboise — are reached in under 1h30 from Paris-Austerlitz or Montparnasse. Once there, several châteaux are walkable or accessible by local bus.

Châteaux you can walk to from the station

Amboise: 10 minutes' walk from the station — probably the simplest château to reach from Paris (1h23 direct train). Blois: the station is 15 minutes' walk from the royal château. Meung-sur-Loire: 10 minutes' walk from the station to the château with two faces — and the best base to radiate from. Saumur, Chinon, Tours also have walkable châteaux from the station. For Chambord, Chenonceau and Cheverny, see the next section.

How to reach Chambord, Cheverny and Chenonceau without a car

Chambord from Blois: Rémi Loir-et-Cher (line 3) year-round, ~35 minutes. In high season, the practical Châteaubus shuttle. Cheverny from Blois: Rémi line 4, ~30 minutes. Chenonceau from Tours: direct train to Chenonceaux station (15 minutes), then 3 minutes on foot. The simplest option. Bus rides cost €4-6. Don't try to chain Chambord and Chenonceau the same day without a car — possible but exhausting.

Ideal 2-day car-free programme

Saturday: Paris → Tours by TGV (1h15), local train Tours → Chenonceaux (15 min), Chenonceau 2h, lunch on site, back to Tours, walk through old town, dinner. Night in Tours or Meung-sur-Loire (1h by train from Tours). Sunday: Meung-sur-Loire (visit the château with two faces in the morning), train Meung → Blois (10 min), bus to Chambord, afternoon visit. Back to Paris from Blois early evening (1h30). Two royal châteaux + one intimate château + a medieval town, no car.

Loire by Bike: the cherry on top

If you want to add a nature dimension, hire a bike at your base. The EuroVelo 6 (Loire by Bike) route runs along the river on a separated cycle path. From Meung-sur-Loire, you can reach Beaugency (10 km), Orléans (18 km) or Blois (50 km) without touching a car. TER regional trains accept bikes without reservation outside peak hours, making the return easy. Ideal for a Sunday morning before the Paris return.

Practical tips

Book train tickets 2-3 weeks in advance for Prem's fares (from €16 per trip). Download the Rémi app for regional buses in Loir-et-Cher (Chambord, Cheverny). Pack a small suitcase — many Loire stations have no luggage storage. Check Sunday bus schedules: services run on reduced timetables, better to plan the most distant châteaux for Saturday.

A car-free Loire castles weekend takes a bit of planning, but it works — and it's more restful than you might think. From La Maison du Château in Meung-sur-Loire, the station is 10 minutes' walk: you're 1 hour from Paris-Austerlitz, and 15 minutes from the major royal châteaux by local transport.
