Why pair these two châteaux
Chambord and Cheverny are complementary. Chambord is sheer scale: double-helix staircase, 426 rooms, a royal forest larger than Paris. Cheverny is intimacy: an intact interior lived in by the same family for 6 centuries, remarkable French gardens, and the house that inspired Captain Haddock's castle in Tintin. One tells the story of royalty, the other of lasting aristocracy. Chaining both, you really grasp the spirit of the Loire.
Hour-by-hour programme from Meung-sur-Loire
8:30am — Leave the house after coffee. 9:15am — Arrive at Chambord at opening, easy parking at this hour. 9:30-11:30am — Calm visit: staircase, royal apartments, terraces (360° view over the forest). 12:00pm — Lunch in Bracieux (10 min from Chambord, several serious tables). 2:00pm — Arrive at Cheverny. 2:15-4:30pm — Visit: lived-in interior, trophy room, vegetable and tulip gardens (depending on season). 5:00pm — Coffee and tarte tatin in Cour-Cheverny village. 6:00pm — Back to Meung, dinner on the terrace.
Chambord: what you absolutely must see
The double-helix staircase attributed to Leonardo da Vinci — where two people can climb without ever crossing. The royal apartments of François I. The panoramic terraces, the only real spot to grasp the scale of the estate. And above all, take 30 minutes to walk across the inner courtyard after the visit — the architecture reveals itself differently when your eyes are off the guidebook.
Cheverny: what not to miss
The preserved interior is rare in France: original tapestries, royal beds never moved, the Arms Room. The pack of hunting dogs (40 dogs, spectacular feeding around 11:30am or 5pm depending on season) attracts children. And the rose garden in June, the vegetable garden all year — worth a half-hour walk on their own.
Where to eat between the two
Bracieux is the optimal point — a village exactly between Chambord and Cheverny. Our favourite: Le Relais de Bracieux, a chef's brasserie with a short slate menu. For a quicker lunch, Chez Chrystel serves bistronomic specials. If you want a picnic, buy at the baker in Chambord-village (south parking entrance) — there are tables by the pond.
Tips to stay fresh at the end of the day
Cap Chambord at 2h (you won't see everything, that's fine). Lunch break of at least 1h, seated. At Cheverny, do the gardens before the interior if the weather is good — the interior can be done tired, the gardens can't. Water and comfortable shoes are essential. With this rhythm, you're back in Meung by 6pm, fresh for a relaxed dinner.
If you have 30 more minutes: Beauregard
The Château de Beauregard, 15 minutes from Cheverny, is a lesser-known gem. Its Gallery of Illustrious Persons gathers 327 historical portraits over 30 metres — unique in Europe. Quick 45-minute visit. Ideal if you're leaving the next morning and want a third château the same day. Otherwise, keep it for a future stay.
