The Ladies' Château

Château de Chenonceau

Set on the Cher river, supported by five white arches, Chenonceau is arguably the most photogenic château in the Loire Valley. Six women shaped it — a rarity in French heritage. Here's everything you should know before visiting.

Architecture on the Cher: a Renaissance feat

Built between 1513 and 1521 by Katherine Briçonnet, extended by a gallery over the bridge in 1576-1581 under Catherine de Médicis, Chenonceau spans the Cher river over 60 metres. The effect is unique in Europe: a château that seems to float on water. Viewed from the bank, the morning reflection is one of the most recognised images of French heritage. Listed Monument Historique in 1840 and UNESCO World Heritage since 2000.

Six women wrote its history

Katherine Briçonnet supervised construction in the 16th century while her husband was at war. Diane de Poitiers, favourite of Henri II, commissioned the bridge over the Cher. Catherine de Médicis, his widow, added the gallery above the bridge after Henri II's death. Louise de Lorraine mourned there for two years in a black chamber. Louise Dupin saved it during the French Revolution thanks to her literary circle. And during the First World War, Simonne Menier turned it into a military hospital.

The gardens of Diane and Catherine

Two iconic gardens face each other. Diane's garden is more structured: geometric, classical French, dominated by trimmed yews. Catherine's garden is more intimate, with its central fountain and concentric beds. In spring, tulips and peonies bring colour. In summer, roses take over. Plan 30 to 45 minutes per garden. Walking through before the interior visit prepares the eye for the château's scale.

What you must absolutely see inside

Diane de Poitiers' bedroom (original four-poster bed, Flemish tapestries). The great gallery over the Cher (60 m, two levels, original parquet floor, exceptional light). The 16th-century kitchen built into a pier of the bridge — one of Europe's finest historic kitchens. The state rooms with period furniture. The interior visit takes around 1h30 to 2h.

How to avoid the crowds

Chenonceau is more saturated than Chambord in high season, especially on Sundays. Strategy 1: arrive at opening (9am) — 1h of calm visit before the tour buses arrive. Strategy 2: arrive after 4pm in high season — flow tapers off, atmosphere settles. Strictly avoid 14 July and May long weekends. On weekdays (Tuesday, Thursday) outside school holidays: comfortable even in July.

Practical: hours, prices, access

Open year-round. Hours: 9am-6pm in high season (sometimes 7pm in July-August), 9am-5pm off-season. Adult ticket: €17, children 7-18: €13.50, free under 7. Audio guide €4 (FR, EN, ES, IT, DE, NL, RU, JP, CN). Online booking strongly recommended. By train: Chenonceaux station 3 minutes' walk from the château, served from Tours (15 min). It's the easiest Loire château to reach by train. By car from Meung-sur-Loire: 1h10 via A85 then D81.

Combine Chenonceau with Amboise

Chenonceau is 25 minutes from Amboise — the classic one-day combination. Ideal programme: Chenonceau in the morning at opening, lunch in Chenonceaux or en route to Amboise, afternoon at the royal château of Amboise and Clos Lucé. Back to your base early evening. This day means 2h30 of driving from Meung-sur-Loire — leave early.
