A living château, not a museum
The Hurault family has lived at Cheverny since the 14th century — six hundred years. The current marquis and marquise still live in a wing closed to the public. This family continuity is unique in France for a château open to visitors. Tapestries, furniture, portraits are original. You visit a home, not an exhibition. That's what makes Cheverny different.
The Tintin effect and the permanent exhibition
Hergé came to Cheverny in the 1940s to sketch what would become Marlinspike Hall. Compare the façades: the two side pavilions are cropped on Marlinspike, but the central body and overall architecture are identical. The permanent exhibition "The Secrets of Marlinspike" reconstructs Tintin scenes, dives into the backstory of Captain Haddock, and reproduces the mummy of Rascar Capac. For fans: an extra hour. For children: a highlight.
The pack of hounds — the unexpected spectacle
Cheverny keeps a pack of forty hunting hounds (Anglo-French tricolour). Their feeding — the "soupe" — is a striking spectacle: dogs waiting in absolute silence, then bursting forward at a single signal. It's one of the most memorable moments on the Loire châteaux trail. Location: the dog courtyard, 100 metres from the château. Times: vary by season, generally 11:30am or 5pm. Free with the château ticket.
The remarkable gardens
Three gardens. The tulip garden in spring (March-April): 250,000 bulbs in flower over two magical weeks. The structured vegetable garden, open year-round. The arboretum, a quiet walk among century-old oaks. The whole park is 100 hectares — you can spend a morning there if the weather cooperates. Boat hire available on the canal for €6 per half hour.
Practical: hours, prices, access
Open year-round. Hours: 9:15am-6:30pm in summer, 10am-5pm in winter. Adult ticket: €14.50, children 6-14: €11. Combined château + park + Tintin ticket: €17.50. Plan 2h for château + gardens, 3h with the dog feeding and Tintin exhibition. No restaurant on site; café and shop only. The nearby village of Cour-Cheverny offers good lunch options.
Combine with Chambord
Cheverny and Chambord are only 25 minutes apart. The one-day combination is extremely popular and works: Chambord in the morning (imposing), Cheverny in the afternoon (intimate). You see both faces of Loire aristocracy. Bracieux, halfway, is the ideal lunch spot. See our combo Chambord & Cheverny in one day guide.
